How to report an error, what happens next, and every correction this publication has issued.

Short answer

Write to [email protected] with the page address and what is wrong. Corrections are acknowledged within five business days. A factual error is corrected on the page itself, and the correction is logged here with the date and what changed. Corrections are not made silently.

Include the page address, the statement you believe is wrong, and -- if you have one -- the source that shows what is correct. You do not need to be the subject of the page to report an error on it.

What gets corrected

A factual error: a wrong name, date, figure, requirement or rule.
A broken or wrong destination on a cited resource.
An affiliation that is not disclosed where it should be.
A page that reads as advice in a regulated area where it must not.

What does not get changed on request

Disagreement with a judgement the page openly presents as a judgement.
A request to remove an accurate statement because it is unflattering.
A request to be added to, removed from, or ranked within a list. This publication does not rank.

A request in the second category still gets a reply. It just does not get a silent edit.

How a correction is handled

The report is acknowledged. Corrections are acknowledged within five business days.
The claim is checked against the source the page relied on.
If the page is wrong it is fixed, and a note is added to the page itself saying what was changed and when.
The correction is added to the log below with the date and the page.
If the page is not wrong, the reporter is told why, with the source.

Corrections are not made silently. A page that has been materially corrected says so. This matters more than it sounds: a publication that quietly edits its errors is indistinguishable from one that never had any, and that is not a claim this site is willing to imply.
